LASER HAIR REMOVAL FAQ’s

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK

Hair laser removal works by using a laser to target the melanin pigment in the hair follicles. The laser emits a concentrated beam of light that is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, causing it to heat up and damage the follicle. This damage inhibits further hair growth.

During the procedure, a hand-held device with a laser is used to pulse the light onto the targeted area of the skin. The laser targets only the dark pigment of the hair, leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. The laser also has a cooling mechanism to help minimize discomfort and protect the skin.

ON WHAT SKIN TYPE LASER MORE EFFECTIVE

It is important to note that laser hair removal is more effective on individuals with lighter skin tones and darker hair, as the contrast between the skin and hair color allows for better absorption of the laser energy. People with darker skin tones or lighter hair may require higher laser settings or different laser types to achieve optimal results.

The risk of damage to skin is greater when there is little contrast between hair and skin color, but advances in laser technology have made laser hair removal an option for people who have darker skin. Laser hair removal is less effective for hair colors that don’t absorb light well: gray, red, blond and white. However, laser treatment options for light-colored hair continue to be developed.

HOW OFTEN CAN WE DO LASER HAIR REMOVAL

The frequency of laser hair removal treatments can vary depending on several factors, including the location of the treatment area, hair growth cycles, and individual response to the treatment. On areas where hair grows quickly, such as the upper lip, the treatment might be repeated in four to eight weeks. On areas of slow hair growth, such as the back, the treatment might be repeated in 10-12 weeks.

CAN WE DO LASER HAIR REMOVAL ON ALL BODY?

Laser hair removal can be performed on various areas of the body, but the ease and effectiveness of the treatment may vary depending on the specific body part.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL ON MEN AND WOMEN

The ease of hair removal with laser on men or women is not significantly different. Both men and women can undergo laser hair removal to effectively reduce unwanted hair.

RISKS

Risks of side effects vary with skin type, hair color, treatment plan and adherence to pre-treatment and post-treatment care. The most common side effects of laser hair removal include: Skin irritation. Temporary discomfort, redness and swelling are possible after laser hair removal. Any signs and symptoms typically disappear within several hours.

Pigment changes. Laser hair removal might darken or lighten the affected skin. These changes might be temporary or permanent.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL AND PREGNANCY

While there is no evidence that laser hair removal can negatively impact the fetus, there is also no evidence that it does not. Prevention is better than cure. Therefore, it is safer to interrupt any laser hair removal treatment a patient may have started before knowing of their pregnancy, and go back to it at least two months after giving birth.

SUN TANNING AND SUNBED

It is important not to confuse naturally dark skin with tanned skin. Laser hair removal works on brown and black skin thanks to lasers able to bypass the dermis without relying too much on melanin to do so. Natural pigmentation is not a contraindication to laser hair removal.

Tanning however is widely different and one of the few big contraindications for laser hair removal. Tans, whether caused by the sun, spray tans, or tanning moisturizers, place the melanin in the skin in an unnatural ‘excited’ state. Not only can it interfere with the treatment and increase risks of burning but may also incur other light damage like brown spots or hyperpigmentation.

CHEMICAL CREAMS AND OTHER HAIR REMOVAL METHODS

Laser hair removal requires a hair root to target. Indeed, it is the connection between hair and follicle that allows the energy to go from the former to the latter. Waxing, sugaring and plucking all remove the hair with its root from the shaft. There is therefore nothing to target. A client who recently waxed must wait six weeks to ensure all the hair has grown back.

CHEMICAL PEELS TREATMENTS

Other contraindications for laser hair removal include facial treatments such as chemical peels treatments. You may have a facial and then undergo laser should both treatments be in two different areas. Chemical peel will leave the skin very sensitive and may lead to pigmentation which the laser can target.

HOW TO PREPARE

Instructions to prepare for laser hair removal. These might include:
Staying out of the sun. Follow your doctor’s advice for avoiding sun exposure before and after treatment. Whenever you go out, apply a broad-spectrum, SPF30 sunscreen.

Lightening your skin. Avoid any sunless skin creams that darken your skin. Your doctor might also prescribe a skin bleaching cream if you have a recent tan or darker skin.

Avoiding other hair removal methods. Plucking, waxing and electrolysis can disturb the hair follicle and should be avoided at least four weeks before treatment.

Avoiding blood-thinning medications. Ask your doctor about what medications, such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, to avoid before the procedure.
Shaving treatment area. Trimming and shaving is recommended 3 days before laser treatment. It removes hair above the skin that can result in surface skin damage from burnt hairs, but it leaves the hair shaft intact below the surface.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

You might notice redness and swelling for the first few hours after laser hair removal.

To reduce any discomfort,  you can apply ice to the treated area. If you have a skin reaction immediately after laser hair removal, it’s better to consult with the doctor.

After laser hair removal and between scheduled treatments, it is crucial to avoid sunlight and don’t use a tanning bed for six weeks. Use of a broad-spectrum SPF30 sunscreen daily essential.

After laser hair removal, you typically do not need to wait for a specific period of time before shaving again. In fact, shaving is often encouraged in between laser hair removal sessions to manage any regrowth and maintain smooth skin.
It’s important to note that laser hair removal targets the hair follicles beneath the skin, and it does not remove the hair immediately. The treated hair will gradually fall out over the following weeks. During this time, you can continue shaving as needed to manage any remaining hair.

Understanding Laser Tattoo Removal: How It Works and What It Can Do

Tattoo removal has come a long way from its early methods, with laser technology revolutionizing the process. As a beauty therapist and laser tattoo removal specialist, I want to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how modern laser tattoo removal works, the differences between various types of lasers, and what pigment colors can be effectively removed using these technologies.

How Laser Tattoo Removal Works

Laser tattoo removal utilizes high-intensity light beams to break down the ink particles embedded in the skin. The process involves the following steps:

Energy Absorption:
The laser emits short bursts of high-energy light that are absorbed by the tattoo ink particles in the skin.

Ink Fragmentation:
The absorbed light energy causes the ink particles to heat up and shatter into smaller fragments.

Natural Elimination:
Over the weeks following the treatment, the body’s immune system gradually flushes out these fragmented ink particles through natural processes, such as the lymphatic system.

ND:YAG Laser Technology
The Q-switched ND:YAG laser is a popular choice for tattoo removal due to its versatility and effectiveness. This laser comes with two different probes, each tuned to a specific wavelength:
– 1064nm Wavelength:
Ideal for treating darker pigments, such as black and dark blue tattoos. The 1064nm wavelength has deeper skin penetration and is less absorbed by melanin, making it safer for darker skin tones.
– 532nm Wavelength:
Used for brighter and more superficial colors like red, orange, and some yellows. This wavelength is effective for these colors but requires careful handling due to its higher melanin absorption.

Differences Between Various Laser Technologies
There are several types of lasers used in tattoo removal, each with its own characteristics:

Q-Switched ND:YAG Lasers:
Pros: Versatile, effective on a wide range of ink colors, safe for various skin types.
Cons: May require multiple sessions for complete removal.

Q-Switched Ruby Lasers:
Wavelength: 694nm.
Pros: Effective for blue and green pigments.
Cons: Higher risk of hypopigmentation, less effective on darker skin tones.

Q-Switched Alexandrite Lasers:
Wavelength: 755nm.
Pros: Good for green and black ink.
Cons: Can cause pigmentation changes, not suitable for all skin types.

PicoSecond Lasers:
Pros: Greater precision, fewer treatments required, effective for recalcitrant tattoos.
Cons: Higher cost, more intense sessions.

Pigment Colors and Laser Efficacy
Different ink colors respond differently to laser treatments due to their unique absorption characteristics:

Black and Dark Blues:
These colors are the easiest to remove because they absorb all laser wavelengths well, especially the 1064nm wavelength of the ND:YAG laser.

Red, Orange, and Some Yellows:
Best treated with the 532nm wavelength. Red pigments often respond well, but yellows can be more challenging.

Green and Light Blues:
Often require specific wavelengths like those from Ruby or Alexandrite lasers. Green pigments can be the most stubborn to break down.

White and Flesh Tones:
These pigments do not absorb laser light effectively and can be problematic, sometimes resulting in darkening instead of fading.

Conclusion
Laser tattoo removal, especially with advanced ND:YAG lasers, offers a precise and effective method to address unwanted tattoos. Understanding the mechanics of how lasers work, the distinctions between various laser technologies, and the responsiveness of different ink colors can empower you to make an informed decision about your tattoo removal journey.

BLACK DIAMOND CARBON FACIALS FAQ’s

Some of your questions answered

HOW DOES IT WORK?

We’ll apply a layer of liquid carbon to your face (or body), allowing it to penetrate deeply into your pores and let them dry. The carbon bonds with any debris that might be present, like dead skin cells, contaminants, and oil.

We’ll then pass a laser across the surface of your skin. Because the laser light is super attracted to carbon particles, its energy and heat are absorbed by the carbon paste destroying the particles in your pores.

As the heat from the laser is pulsed deep into the skin, our skin’s natural healing mechanisms are activated in the deeper layers. Cellular turnover is stimulated, and fibroblasts are ignited to begin regenerating collagen and elastin. Over a few weeks to months, the regenerative results will continue.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A LASER CARBON PEEL?

The carbon facial laser skin rejuvenation treatment is especially effective for the treatment of the following skin imperfections:

* Enlarged pores
* Acne and acne scars
* Pigmentation and hyperpigmentation
* Dull skin
* Blocked pores
* Fine lines and wrinkles
* Stimulation of collagen production

Chemical peels also treat these skin conditions, but here are some of the main differences between the two:

* laser carbon peels use heat instead of chemicals for results
* laser carbon peels require no downtime
* people with sensitive skin or skin conditions like eczema will usually experience
* less redness and irritation after a carbon peel than from a chemical peel.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT:
  1. Your therapist will spread a layer of liquid carbon onto your face. The carbon absorbs oil, dirt, and dead skin cells from deep within the pores.
  2. You’ll wait for about 10 minutes for the liquid carbon to dry.
  3. After the carbon has dried, your therapist will give you eye shields to protect your eyes from the laser.
  4. Your therapist will use an Nd: YAG laser over the skin in a low-energy setting.
  5. The light from the laser is highly attracted to the carbon particles. The carbon absorbs the light energy from the laser, causing it to vaporise. As the laser makes contact with the carbon, you will hear a loud audible ‘crack’. Although loud, this is nothing to worry about and is just the sound of laser vaporising the carbon.
  6. Your therapist will apply a hydrating moisturizer and sunscreen to your skin after treatment.
  7. You should immediately see brighter, glowing skin and tighter pores.
  8. If you have sensitive skin, you may experience a slight pinking or reddening of the skin. This usually lasts for one hour or less.
WHAT’S THE AFTERCARE LIKE FOR A LASER CARBON PEEL?

Here are some do’s and don’ts for laser carbon peel aftercare:

* Treat your skin gently after getting a laser carbon peel by continuing to moisturize daily.
* It’s normal to see some flaking or experience dryness for a few days,
* Use sunscreen regularly with at least SPF 50+ for several days after treatment.
* Don’t use any products containing retinol for at least five days after treatment.
* Do not exfoliate or use any abrasive or invasive skin treatments for at least one week.
* If you have oily skin, use products designed to combat acne to maintain optimum results.
* Use products containing collagen, and collagen supplements, or follow a collagen-boosting diet if you have photoaged skin or fine lines.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF A LASER CARBON PEEL?

The Carbon Facial is extremely safe. Apart from a slight reddening of the skin and a tingling sensation, there should be no side effects after a laser carbon peel. Laser carbon peels are painless and require no recovery time. Other than mild and temporary redness, there are no reported side effects.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL YOU NEED TO ACHIEVE MY DESIRED RESULT?

Results are accumulative, each carbon facial treatment builds upon the previous one. Once the regeneration of cell turnover is started, the best way to keep making improvements to the skin is to commit to a course of treatments.

We recommend 3-6 treatments over a period of 2-3 months with a booster treatment every six months for the best results.
